How do you Make Salisbury Steak from Scratch?

Making Salisbury steak is easy. Start by mixing all the ingredients for the Salisbury steaks except for the oil in a large mixing bowl, then shape them into 4 patties each about ¾ of an inch to 1” in thickness. Heat your oil over medium-high heat in a large nonstick skillet, then add the steaks, browning 3 to 4 minutes per side. Move them to a separate plate then make the gravy by reducing the heat to medium and adding butter. When the butter melts, add your flour and whisk until smooth, then add the beef stock and whisk. Next, add the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and onion powder and whisk, followed by the mushrooms. Simmer for 5 minutes until it thickens, then season with salt and pepper. Add the steaks back into the gravy and cook for about 10 minutes until steaks are completely cooked.

Expert Tips and Tricks for the Perfect Salisbury Steak Every Time

  • Don’t over-work the meat mixture. Like making burgers or meatballs, you don’t want to make the beef tough. Simply combining the meat patty ingredients well is all you need.
  • Get the skillet hot. You need to sear these much like steaks.
  • Only cook a short time. Once these are browned, get them out of the skillet. They will finish cooking in the gravy. If you cook them too long before then, they will come out tough.
