French toast is so easy. I think it’s easier than pancakes. And everyone loves it. My kids and my husband never leave a trace of it behind when they’re done eating!

- Bread – Without it, it will be hard to make French toast. The thicker, the better! If you want the real deal, opt for Brioche bread!
- Butter – It gives French toast that rich taste!
- Eggs – This is the essential component to work with the bread.
- Half and half – Along with the eggs, it makes it more custardy to create that flavor we all know and love! Heavy cream can also be used as a substitute.
- Vanilla extract – This gives the french toast such an amazing flavor boost. Some people even add a bit of brown sugar to the mix if you like it extra sweet but it is not necessary.
How to Make French Toast from Scratch
The secret to amazing French toast is in the bread. In France, they use stale bread, believe it or not. You can buy special bread to make French toast with or simply grab what you have in your kitchen. Just make it!

What is the Best Bread for French Toast?
In this recipe, I use brioche bread. It’s nice and thick and pillowy, making it a perfect choice. I’ve also used challah, sourdough, Texas toast, and even regular sandwich style white bread. Thicker slices are indeed the best though.
What Milk to Use for French Toast?
You can use any milk you have on hand. My preference though is half and half. It’s just a little richer than regular milk and works beautifully to create that custard-like texture with the eggs to bathe your bread in.
What Sweeteners to Use for French Toast?
Some people use sugar and other sweeteners when making their French toast. This recipe doesn’t do that. You’ll see the best way to make it is simply topping it with a dusting of powdered sugar at the end and serving it with warm maple syrup. Make sure you get real maple syrup too. It is SO much more expensive, but it doesn’t contain that gross high fructose corn syrup in it. Pure maple syrup has an exceptional taste if you’ve never tried it.
How Long to Soak the Bread?
If you want to be sure your homemade French Toast comes out perfectly, do NOT submerge your bread in the egg/milk mixture for longer than a few seconds per side. The bread will fall apart and make a huge mess. Act quickly for the best results!
Can you put oil in the pan when making French toast?
Yes, but it is not recommended. Butter works best for French toast. Butter adds that rich flavor that everyone loves about French toast.

How to Store Leftover French Toast
Uh oh…did everyone claim they were hungrier than they were, leaving you with a bunch of leftover French toast? No problem! Simply cover it with aluminum foil or plastic wrap, then put it in a plastic bag to keep it from getting dried out. You can reheat it the next morning!
Can You Freeze French Toast?
Yes! Just put each slice between wax paper, then wrap it all up in aluminum foil or put in a freezer bag.
How to Reheat French Toast?
You can reheat french toast in the microwave, but I do not recommend that. It doesn’t have the same texture and feels like those breakfast buffets. Instead, heat your oven to 400F and add your French toast to a lined baking sheet. Cook for about 4 minutes on each side.
Classic French Toast Recipe
- 1 loaf brioche bread sliced into 6 thick slices
- 2 tbsp butter
- 5 eggs
- 1 cup half and half
- 1 tbsp cinnamon
- 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- Prepare the egg wash. Whisk the eggs, half and half, cinnamon, and vanilla extract together until thoroughly combined. Set aside.
- Heat the butter in the skillet until its bubbly.
- Dip each brioche slice into the egg wash, soaking both sides for a few seconds on each side. Fry the bread in the skillet on medium high heat, flipping until both sides are golden brown (about 2-3 minutes). Repeat this process with the remaining 5 slices.
- Serve with powdered sugar and warmed maple syrup with a side of fresh fruit.
